JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Fred: The had a TV and some books. No weights or
anything like that. Alfred: The whole time I was there we did nothing much of
anything. I saw in another block I obsereved not
much happening there. I saw chess and some sport
activity, but not much. Cards, books, a bible study
group and tv was there between assignments and other
interviews we did. Darryl: They only had two common TV's that you could
watch when they let you. The biggest guy
controlled them. You could play cards if you
could get a deck. Otherwise you could read or
find a way to pass the time. People barely talked
to each other out of fear
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Fred: There was never any trouble like that. Things
were pretty calm all the time I was there. Alfred: The TV was basically controlled by the group.
Majority rulled and it was mostly sports if they
could get it. Again, sports equiipment was first
come, first sereved. Most wher easy enough to
share if they felt like it. There was not any
problems that I could see of with the sports
equipment. Books and reading materialwas a hugh
compitition though. There wasn't any books tospeak
of except the few bibles. I read most of the New
Testement when I was in. Darryl: The only entertainment was the TV's and it was
impossible to get to watch anything but what the
big guy put on. Usually they would put on
whatever game was being played at the time but
they would turn the volume up all the way so it
hurt to listen
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Fred: Not really. I would do pushups to keep things
going. Alfred: I wasn not in long enough. I did a lot of walking
around when I was in. Around the perimiter of the
block Darryl: No, you could always work out in your cell by
yourself. I did a lot of walking around the cell
block
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Fred: Every day for as long as you want. It was an open
yard. Alfred: We walked around the block, up and down the stairs
numeroius times to stay active. We did not go
outside the time I was there except in the court
yard for some basket ball. It was an enclossed
space, but it was still outside in the ait if can
consider that. Darryl: We were allowed to go outside once a day for one
hour. They had exersize equipment or you could
play basketball with the other inmates
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Fred: The services were pretty good. They had them in
the a hall right across from the cell block in
seperate room. Alfred: I don't remem ber being offerd church services that
Sunday and I did not see a chaplin or such the time
I was there. Darryl: They had no church services. There was a local
pastor that came by once a week and gave out free
bibles.
