JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Clayton: we got two phone calls per week Darryl: Yes you could make collect calls in the pod and then
in delainy we had a phone in the room that was on
certain hours . Kristofer: yeah, there were 4 phones on our block, but only
3 worked and there was usually a line for all of
them
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Clayton: we receive 2 calls free and 50 cents for each
additionl call. i would guess depending onthe
person about 3 dollars a week Darryl: I know I talked to my mom everyday . I am sure it
was hundreds of dollars . they charge you more from
jail . which isnt fair at all . why should you be
charged more because your in jail ? Kristofer: if you called out it was a collect call. but
mostly friends/family would buy calling cards
with prepaid minutes. Most inmates probably had
someone spending over 50 dollars a week on phone
cards
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Clayton: no phone card was needed, you just use your case
numbr Darryl: No you did not need to buy a phone card. Kristofer: no. the person on the outside had to buy the
phone card or else you just called out collect
and they had to accept the charges
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Clayton: i am not sure about this but i was suspicious
that they do to make sure you didnt say anything
incriminating. Darryl: I dont for certain , but I am sure they did Kristofer: yes they listened into your calls. same thing
with your visits and they opened your mail, both
incoming and outgoing
