JM: Did you always have access to necessary medications? Victor: If you were in horrible pain they would give you
ibuprofen. If you didn't want that they would give
you tylenol. No matter how much pain you were in
or what was wrong with you, they would give those
to you. Often people would go to the psychologist
and say they were having violent thoughts or
hearing voices, they did this to either get high
off of the medication or to "cheek" the medication
and to sell it. Mike: Yes I did have access to the medications I was on
when in county jail.
JM: How did you get your medications? Victor: They have the nurse cart come by and shut off the
TVs and then they call it out and you wait in line.
One person at a time. Mike: I was brought down to the nurse, accompanied by a
guard on a daily basis. The night time medicine was
brought to me in a paper cup with a glass of water.
JM: What types of punishments were incurred for abuse of drugs? Did you ever witness this? Victor: I have seen people who had their cells searched and
they found medications that were stashed. They
usually go to the box for a period of time. It
depends on the offense, how many times they were
caught, how much, and if they snitch and offer the
police information. Mike: I didn't see any drug use. I did witness inmates
fermenting fruit over a period of time to produce
alcohol so I did see inmates who got drunk. The
punishment was a week in solitary. It was considered
an offense but not enough to add any time to the
sentence.
