Leisure Time

Interview with Drew and Matt

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Drew: The Rec yard we could play ball workout pushups sit ups and pull ups. Also inmates would run jog or walk you could do dips or other cario activity or even play handball. Unfortunetly that was about it other than N/a meetings. Although I wished there was considerably more to do.
Matt: Television. Thats it. We were given rec time EARLY in the morning, before anyone really wakes up, so no one ever really woke up on time to go out. The most I got to go outside was when they would shake down our cells. It was very very suffocating in there. Nothing to do.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Drew: I had regular access to most of the facilities available. Except for the T.v. channels and such because the mexican nationals would share with the americans. So half the time we watched novellas spanish soap operas and lucha libre or futbol. Which in english is wrestling and spanish soccer how interesting.
Matt: Competition was definitely fierce. Many fights or arguments were started over access to the tv, amongst inmates and with the correctional officers. The biggest fights were about the spanish speaking inmates wanting to watch spanish television and the rest of the english speaking inmates wanting to watch regular tv. Since its such a tight overcrowded space its impossible to hear the TV so when a movie comes on a lot of people get mad about the noise.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Drew: No not particularly because no meat is served only soy products first of all. And I was constantly working out.
Matt: Yes, with the constant hunger and lack of chances to get outside, I found myself highly unmotivated. The 3 'balanced' meals a day don't keep one full, and that left me feeling tired a lot.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Drew: One to three times a weeks to the rec yard. We would go play basketball or workout or walk run etc.. I would workout in cell.
Matt: We were technically allowed to go out every day, but our rec time was so early in the morning that no one ever woke up on time to go out. Outside we were allowed to walk, or use the meager equipment they had.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Drew: There was a chaplain and there was bible study in the multi purpose rooms throughout the jail mostly by X pod
Matt: I do not believe the jail held church services, unless a volunteer would come in to hold a service for the inmates.
