Telephones

Interview with Charles and Nick

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Charles: We did have access but it was such a rip off.
Nick: Yes if you can afford the plan

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Charles: $3 for every four minutes. Really puts a burden on families who want to stay in touch but can't afford to.
Nick: That is hard question to answer because calls were collect, people from the streets called all the time and I could only guess it be at least 50.00 a day

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Charles: No phones cards. Your family has to set up account. They have t pay for it and only once they set up that account can you make the phone calls.
Nick: No, I was only there for a short time, and my wife came to see me. I knew exactly what day and what time I was leaving

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Charles: All the phones are screened.
Nick: I could only guess someone at least screened the phone numbers. You were allowed a list of 10 numbers you could call beside legal representation and would have to use your inmate number as a pin
