Telephones

Interview with Will

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Will: Yes, although I did not use it much.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Will: I did not use the phone much. It depends on the inmate making the calls. Some people get desperately home sick and use the phone every night. I used it pretty much once a month, or after I had court and had to relay important information.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Will: No, if I remember correctly the person you are calling has to have a land line and has to accept the charges. I often had to use the phone that was by the front desk, because I had a hard time getting a hold of my family and often had to call a cell phone. If you find a nice corrections officer or know someone (my old baby sitter was a CO here), you can get a call that way. But you need permission and proper timing to do so.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Will: I don't know. People say they do but it is all speculation.
