Telephones

Interview with Sally and Marsha

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Sally: yes but they were highly in use
Marsha: Yes, I did. It was first come first serve basic.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Sally: we made collect calls to gtl so the charges went through a billing program with our families
Marsha: I don't remember I think it was 50 cent per minutes you put money on a card or coins. I guess inmates spend $5 a week.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Sally: no the hail had a billing system in place and families would call and activiate it so we could easily make our collect calls
Marsha: It was optional, I used a card.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Sally: yes
Marsha: Yes, they do. Outgoing calls only you not allow incoming calls.
