JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Jake: Yes misty: YES Sam: Yes on out time we had access to the phone. 15
minute calls and the had at least four phones per
pod. Bruce: Not when I was in the intake block Brian: Yes; each gen pop unit had four phones for inmate
use.
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Jake: $1.90 a call misty: IT COSETED ABOUT 265 TO MAKE A PHONE CALL SO YOU
COULD CALL COLLECT OR PURCHASE A CALLING CARD ON
COMMISARY Sam: $1.97 per call with a phone card. And $2.30 to
call collect. Bruce: ridiculous ones they would charge them 20 dollars
for like 5 minutes Brian: Calls to your attorney were free, as was one call to
request that an outside party place money on your
phone account; it worked out to 20 cents per minute.
Most inmates made 20-30 minutes worth of calls in a
week.
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Jake: Yes misty: YOU DIDNT HAVE TO BUT IF THE OTHER PERSON
COULDNT ACCEPT COLLECT CALLS THEN YOU WOULD HAVE
TO Sam: Yes, $10 or $20 dollar phone cards once a week. Or
you had to call collect. Bruce: yes I eventually did Brian: Yes; a unique PIN was set up for your unique phone
card.
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Jake: yes misty: YES, MOSTLY WHEN THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH STOLEN
PHONE CARDS OR PEOPLE WHO WERE HIGH RISK FOR
ESCAPE OR OTHER ISSUES Sam: Yes they monitored and recorded them. Bruce: I am not sure Brian: Yes, except for calls made to an attorney.
