Telephones

Interview with Tara, Greg and Don

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Tara: if you were housed on the first floor, you needed permission to go upstairs where the phones were.Since I worked in the infirmary, I sent a letter to the social worker on site, saying I could not use the phone. She let me use hers in her office, bi weekly., with her in attendance.
Greg: You do have to telephones in that but it has to be set up by somebody outside of the prison
Don: u can use the phones for a certain amount of time everyday inless you are on lockdown

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Tara: couldn't say. Calls are only allowed to be collect, and the receiver pays the bill, not the inmate
Greg: You too good so many phone calls for $100 in there Yeah if I remember it's phone call was about 10 minutes long
Don: I would guess about 25-50 dollars a week. Depending on how much u called people.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Tara: this is disallowed. You can only call collect
Greg: No like I said somebody outside the prison had to set up your phone account for you
Don: At the time I was in no I didn't need phone cards I just called collect

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Tara: yes, and mail arrived opened.
Greg: Did you are absolutely screens your phone calls for illegal conduct
Don: Yes they are all being recorded.
