JM: What else would you want a friend or family member to know if they have a loved one going to this jail? Matt: I was sick while in prison, I complained of left
side abdominal pain, blood in urine, weight loss,
night sweats, extreme fatigue, I was not taken
seriously by the doctors and nurses, I was given
tylenol and told to see a doctor when i was
released, when I was released i saw a doctor and
was diagnosed with stage 4 renal cell carcinoma, I
was given 6 months to live, I died April 3rd 2012,
my mom is writing this to raise awareness and
change laws regarding inmates availability of
health care while incarcerated, If Matthew had
been taken seriously he would have not been handed
the death sentence by the incompetent doctors at
Groveland correctional facility and he would have
lived a long healthy life, he passed away in my
arms after a 6 month horrible battle with cancer,
he was only 32 years old. Johnny: Be supportive toward your loved ones. It is
difficult for all parties involved but the goal is
to rebuild positive relationships and interactions
and not to return to prison ever again.
JM: If somebody knows they will be serving time in this jail what is your advice to them? Johnny: Find a few good people to do your whole bid with.
Stay active and away from drugs and gambling.
Participate in required programs and everything will
go smooth for you
JM: Please list any other jail or rehab facilities you have been to. Johnny: Elmira Correctional Facility
Auburn Correctional Facility
Cortland County Jail
