JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Matt: excercise Johnny: In Groveland, they provided activities such as
softball, soccer, horse shoes, bocci ball,
basketball, and tennis. Many of the activities
were included in dorm leagues as well. Also there
were 2 outdoor weight shacks and an indoor gym.
The activities building held card playing events
and other writing events and such every so often.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Johnny: Mostly it was very easy to access these events.
They provided ample recreation equipment and time
for inmates to do as they please. Also daily
reminders were posted for inmates to view about
special activities to plan accordingly. Any time
the prison yard opened the inmates could access
the outdoor rec activities
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Johnny: No, I did not. I actually lost 30+ pounds by being
active and not eating much of the state provided
meals.
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Johnny: The prison yard was open for any inmate to use from
7AM-11AM, 1PM-5PM, then again from 7PM-11PM as long
as you did not have a mandatory program. Also indoor
recreation rooms were available if the yard was not
open.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Johnny: There were an assortment of services able to be
attended, I did not partake in any service while
being incarcerated.
