Telephones

Interview with Charlie, Don and Pierce

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Charlie: Yes. There is a pay phone in each tank. The isolation cells do not have pay phones, but there is a “roll around” phone that can be brought to each cell if the inmate requests it.
Don: yes
Pierce: Yes there was a phone in our dorm.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Charlie: I don't remember, but it is very expensive.
Don: 746 for one call
Pierce: Alot of money! That's all I know. You can cost your family, friends and loved ones a fortune if you call all the time. I was conservitive on my calls and made them count. Mail was the best form of communication.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Charlie: No phone cards are available at the jail. All calls are collect calls made through an outside company which handles billing.
Don: no collect only
Pierce: They didn't have phone cards available

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Charlie: Yes. All calls are monitored and recorded.
Don: yes
Pierce: I believe they did. I wouldn't see why they wouldn't. You never know if someone was plotting an escape ect.
