Leisure Time

Interview with Fred

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Fred: We could use the rec yard everyday. We would share it with another pod, so every other day we could go out from 8am to 2:30 pm or from 2:30 pm til 8pm. They also offered bible study once a week. And finally haircuts were once a week you could put in a request to get out of the pod for a little bit to get groomed.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Fred: There was no competition for access to entertainment. On the tv we rotated who had control by race. It was white then mexican then black. Three day rotation. I didn't see any problems over the tv. When the olympics were on we all agreed to watch that. Only competition over games or rec was just voluntary gambling.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Fred: Yes because I would spend a lot of time sitting and sleeping. But not all inmates are as lazy as I am.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Fred: We had access to the rec yard everyday which was a concrete cage with a chainlink fence for a roof to let the light in. We could play basketball and hand ball. If rec was closed we could workout or walk laps in the pod.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Fred: They did offer church once a week. I never went but alot of inmates did. The inmates would also have a prayer circle in the pod everyday before lockdown.
