Interview with Tim, Peter, Iris, Pat, Elsie, Kathleen, George, Amber and Bob
JM: What clothes could you have brought in to wear in the jail (underwear, socks, etc.)? Tim: Street clothes. Since we were only there for the
night, there was no need to make us change into
jumpers or get the body cavity search. Peter: all the clothes there was free for me. i didnt have
to buy any of my clothes. Iris: I would have brought my own underwear and bras
cause that's unsanitary so women would wear pads
so we wouldn't have to make skin contact to that
stuff. Pat: nothing at all could be brought in to be worn.
everything was provided by the county jail. Elsie: Not possible at all. I saw a few very busty women
get bras sent in but no personal clothing
whatsoever. Kathleen: whatever clothes brought in weren't allowed to be
worn inside facility. prescription glasses were
permitted as well as some jewelry if unable to remove George: We could not bring in any of own clothes, we had
to change out of them and they store them for us
until we were released. Amber: YOU WORE COUNTY ISSUED CLOTHES THAT WERE WASHED
ON A WEEKLY BASIS BY THE TRUSTEES
JM: If you had a set uniform, what did it look like? Please be specific about each piece of clothing issued to you. Tim: No, there was no set uniform. Bob: yes.
general population = blue canvas shirt and pants
with elastic waistband and SD Jail stenciled
prominantly on both
Flight risk and high power = green
Inmate Worker = tans
everyone gets white undies, socks and orange
rubbery sandals Peter: we wore blue shirts and blue pants. we had orange
type sandals. socks,white undershirt,underwear. and
thats about it. i think we had pairs each for each
particle of clothing. Iris: I was issued two blue sweat pants two sweat shirt
sweater white socks and orange flip flops white
underwear and a white sports bra . Pat: we were given white tube socks and "tighty whitey"
underwear. A plain white undershirt, A blue
Overshirt and blue pants, and also sandals that
could be worn in the showers were given to each
person the shirts and pants all said S.D. Jail on
them Elsie: Blue pants and shirt. Masculine. There was an
elastic waistband but you absolutely never knew if
it would fit because though there was a Sewing
Department, they couldn't get sizes right if their
lives depended on it. The clothing was frequently
torn or very worn. Kathleen: blue shirt and blue pants for general population.
tans for trustee, green for escapees. also 2
socks, 2 underwear, 2 bras and a yellow nightgown.
and gray sweatshirt George: The uniforms were like navy blue scrubs, with San
Diego Jail printed on the back of the tops. They
gave us disgusting filthy "tighty whiteys". We
also had to wear sandals that were given to us as
well as tube socks. Amber: WE WERE ISSUED 1 PAIR OF DARK BLUE ELASTIC WAIST
BAND PANTS THAT HAD SDJAIL WRITEN IN WHITE DOWN
1 LEG, A DARK BLUE SHIRT WITH SDJAIL ACROSS THE
BACK ALMOST LIKE SCRUBS
JM: Were there any assigned clothes in high demand that an inmate should look for when getting clothing assigned? Tim: None that I know of. Bob: clothes without holes, tears, questionable
stains and in the appropriate size are always in
high demand but good luck getting them unless
you have some juice aka respect Peter: i guess all clothes were in high demand because the
inmates that are they longer would have to either
have them washed or just get another pair. Iris: Depending on behavior they gave different colors
to inmates . Pat: new clothes are in high demand because people like
to look good for visits. Elsie: I found this absurd but if your top and bottom
matched in terms of color, it was considered good.
New panties or bras were again sought after. Most
of the inmates would freak if their clothes had
stains on them, though they had been washed.
Clothing exchange was so bizarre because of
everyone's awful behavior. Kathleen: anything new or matching. and/or as close as
fitting as possible. also non scratchy or thin
materials during summer are preferred George: They gave us a couple pair of each clothing item
when being checked in. Amber: MOST OF THE GIRLS TRIED TO GET A MATCH OF COLORS
BECAUSE AS THE CLOTHES GOT WASHED ETHEY FADED
JM: Was the clothing different between men and women? Tim: I'm sure it was, but I didn't see any women. Peter: im not sure about women. i think its the same. Iris: I was in a all women facility Pat: I never saw any women while I was in custody Elsie: I understand that men had undershirts but otherwise
the clothing was identical. Kathleen: i am not aware of differences. i think men wear
white Ts as well George: I'm not sure, women are assigned to a separate
facility called Las Colinas. Amber: MENS AND WOMENS CLOTHES WERE THE SAME EXCEPT THE
MEN GOT TEE SHIRTS
