JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Jerry: There are few things to do here as in most jails. They have a
kitchen to work in, laundry room, outside maintenance, porter
jobs,, AA/NA, various religious services, a small library, barber
shop, and a small semi outdoor yard on the roof. On the roof
you can play hand ball or basketball. Pat: They offered sewing class a lady came in every
tuesday and taught the girls how to sew with
machines and stuff we made blankets for foster
kids and blankets for the pound hair ties and
stuff, we also got to go to school the teacher
came once a week, and if you qualified you do
trustee work around the jail.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Jerry: They are very good about making sure everyone gets a
chance at "roof" as they call it. It usually comes out to about
two roof visits a week. The only thing that is hard to get is in
the barber shop. squally the people who have court soon get
first priority. They usually only let three or four people go at
any time. Pat: Thats where it got tricky some of the gaurds
would have there favorites in there and if you
werent in good with the gaurds you might not get
to go that day or at all they would take the
ones they liked and tell you there isnt room for
you to go so you got to sit in your tank all day.
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Jerry: I had no problem working out here. The only requirement is
keeping your clothes on while you workout, other than that
working out is allowed. Pat: yeah I went from 185 pounds to 265 we never got
to excercize we could walk circles around are
tank but that got old all you could do was sit
on your bunk and read
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Jerry: The roof is the only direct sunlight available. The only inmates
who get to do maintenance outside the jail are low level
inmates. most inmates exercise in groups by their bed or in the
day room, Pat: We would get to go to the roof maybe once or
twice a week and that was depending on the
weather, we could sometimes get a ball from the
gaurd and play hand ball or just walk circles
around the roof,if we didnt go outside we didnt
do much.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Jerry: I never went to a service but service leaders come from
outside all the time. bible study, Koran study etc. Generally the
service is on a weekend evening. Pat: They did offer church services on sundays and
thursdays sundays was for all tanks except S and
while I was in S tank I had to fight for my
services write several grievances and put inmate
requests in for me to be allowed to go.
