JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't. Stacy: At first not a lot of the girls were friendly at
all I pretty much kept to myself the first week,
but finally a few started to open up to me and
one actually tried flirting with me a lot.
Mostly everyone had there "clicks" and just
stuck with that. A lot of them were overcoming
bad drug addictions so it was very hard for them
a few of them flipped out. Ron: Most inmates were agreeable enough to be civilized with. No
different then being on a college campus or similar societal
situation. But there were a few egotistical bad eggs that harrased
and annoyed other inmates. Tom: No, I didn't.. They realized I'm Deaf, so they left
me alone, being friendly with me.. Some of the
inmates wanted to learn sign language. So, I got
along with the inmates while waiting for my
sentence.
JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates? Stacy: Well like I said I just kept to myself even
though some girls did not like me I just tried
to avoid them so I wouldn't have to stay in
longer than my set date. Sleep was what I did
most hoping the time would go faster. Ron: Mainly I kept to myself, I didnt take anything said towards me as
being directed at me. Essentially playing it off as if they were
speaking to another person. Treated others as I myself would have
preferred to be treated. I tried to compromise in as many situations
as possible. Tom: I didn't have a problem to avoid. I was nice,
respectful, mindful of my business, reading books
in my cell, teach some sign languages to keep them
motivated to learn more about my language. I also
be careful when playing basketball as not to foul
anyone, trying too hard, nor stealing anyone's
ball. I was being mindful of some inmates'
possible tempers.
JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change? Stacy: I did not know one so I'm not sure, but I don't
think so. Ron: No, you couldnt choose a cell mate because there were far to many
inmates for that. Over the course of my 64 days I wound up having
5 different cell mates. First one for 3 days. Second one 30 days. 3rd
one 3 days. 4th one 20-25 days. 5th one 4 days. Tom: No, I wasn't able to choose an inmate as my
cellmate. For my deafness. They put me in with a
real old nice man who waited to be transferred to a
federal prison for the bank robbery.
