JM: How many meals did you get per day? Kandra: Inmates are served 3 meals a day. Paul: 3 and a snack and i get a health bar with my meds
JM: How would you rate the food? Please give details of why. Kandra: The rating of the food while incarcerated is
something that many of us inmates detest as it is
very poor. Many sandwiches and cold meals. The
food is prepared by other inmates I am told. We
were not given enough fresh fruits nor healthy
juice to drink. However, in my case at least I got
an additional serving. Paul: TERRIBLE, the warm food NEVER IS, repeat repeat
repeat hot dogs, balogna tuna fish, the
vegetables are scarce and usually either raw or
drinkable, the drink is usually already
sweetened or sugar free, you dont sugar for
yourself, the food is designed for people with
little exercise possiblities, like high fiber
low sodium
JM: Did you have any favorite/least favorite meals? Kandra: No. I did not have a favorite or least favorite
meal. None of them has any nutritional value and I
merely ate it to survive. Also, I was not fed during
those 12 hours sitting in booking. Paul: no, i just ate to live, you dont go into jail
expecting Mcdonalds or olive garden, you hope
its at least sorta clean
JM: Were there any other snacks offered outside of meals? What was commissary like and how expensive was it? Kandra: The jails do not offer snacks outside of meals.
Commissary is the only way many of us can survive
because if there are certain foods that you do not
eat then you just don't eat. Commissary is very
expensive, at least double what it would cost on
the outside. There is a fairly large variety
though listed on commissary however, if you miss
the times to put in your order or if you just
don't have family/friends to navigate the process
by which to add money to your account, then you
just dont get commissary. Paul: church's and organizations sometimes come in
with snacks and bibles, commissary is expensive
for prison inmates, at least .50 cents more than
food on the street, commisary is really focused
on fast kiddy snacks and personal toiletries
