Telephones

Interview with Kandra and Paul

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Kandra: Yes. But it is only free when being booked and then only local calls then.
Paul: yes, and plenty and i do mean plenty illega phones availible for a price

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Kandra: Because of the collect charges, the amount can average $30-50. Most people who have had a history of jail only use the phones maybe once a week just to check in or to ask for money for the "books" (commissary).
Paul: your can get a phone card that has to be sent to you, most inmate that i knew that got cards usually get a $50 card every 2 weeks

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Kandra: I do not believe that you can buy a card to call out but I was only in the booking area where calls were free although time and number of times you can use the phone is limited.
Paul: no, my family buy the card at wal mart and send me the number and i use it

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Kandra: I am sure! I think I remember hearing the prompt saying that all calls are monitored.
Paul: supposedly, but this jail is very very behind the times
