JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Mathew: At the very end they started a library. There
was church once a week. You could order books
from the Chaplains list for free. There was one
TV in the common area of my pod. They have TVs
in the 7 man cells.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Mathew: When the library finally came, they would come
on Saturday mornings and let you out 2 or 3
cells at a time, and you could check out a few
books per week. Some of the guys would pass
them around because you could read the books
really fast.
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Mathew: There were no weights, and the only exercise you
got was walking around the pod. There was a
little 20X30 outside area and you could go sit
outside sometimes. I would do pushups and use
books for weight lifting. If the guards catch
you doing this they take away the books.
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Mathew: If it wasn't raining you could go out during
your rec time which could be a couple hours a
day. You had to get out of your cell to do
this. Sometimes there were certain guards who
didn't want to deal with this and wouldn't let
anybody out.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Mathew: They were about an hour. There were volunteer
pastors that came in and talked. They showed us
a video once.
