JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Joe: if you're not in holding where it's almost
impossible. otherwise yeah, but it's only
collect. Walter: Yes I did and it was important when I was in the
actual Jail. Wendy: Yes, there were pay phones available. Ella: Yes, there were about 4 or 5 phones available for
use at all times. Annie: Collect calls that are 10 minutes a call
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Joe: like 1.75 or something Walter: I don't remember as I did not get the bill but I
believe it was pretty expensive. Wendy: Collect calling charges - I don't know what the
amounts were, I didn't call anyone while I was
in there other than my mom a couple of times,
but she didn't tell me how much the calls cost. Ella: There was a collect call fee of I want to say 1.75
for local collect calls. On an average I would say
an inmate spends 10-50 dollars on phone calls
depending on whether they are local or long distance. Annie: Calls were around 3.00 each and that was local so
I guess the
average inmate spends or racks up about 30-50
dollars a week
in calls
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Joe: no, you can't. calls to landlines via collect
only Walter: No, you would have to call collect and the party
would need to accept the charges Wendy: No, they had payphones that you had to call
collect from. Ella: Not at this facility but almost all others I did. Annie: You can buy phone cards for prepaid calls or call
collect
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Joe: i'm sure they're recorded Walter: Yes they do, I do not know what they were
looking for though Wendy: Yes, of course - you're in jail, not free. Ella: The recordings always say they do. Annie: Yes the record all calls
