Closing Advice

Interview with Sarah, Sam, Corey, Emma and Jeff

JM: What else would you want a friend or family member to know if they have a loved one going to this jail?
Sarah: be ther for them
Sam: My advice would be to write as much as possilbe and visit as much as possible too cause it helps pass the time and keeps you sane. That and pictures.
Corey: If you read all this,, it sounds pretty bad. Thats because it is..its jail/prison its not desinged to make the inmates comfortable, if that was the case we would all being going to jail. but they MCJ has gotten better over the years.
Emma: The showers are clean, and semi- private. The food is not so good, but eat the healthier stuff, and stay away from the bread, and milk. The guards are decent, if you are decent to them. There are plenty of options to involve yourself in school, church, or rehab, so make sure you take advantage of these. Be your own friend, serve your time, and pay NO mind to any of the other inmates, no matter how genuine or nice they come off.
Jeff: My advice to someone that is. the phones are collect calls only and cost a fortune. that you can only see them for 1 hr twice a week. and that they will be okay

JM: If somebody knows they will be serving time in this jail what is your advice to them?
Sarah: don't do it stop and think
Sam: Remain humble, try to stay out of other peopple's buisness and if somebody does mess with you fight back. If you lay down they are going to punk you the rest of the time you're in there.
Corey: Save any money you get ..dont get involved in others buisness keep an eye on your stuff. and talk to God.. He's is always there. Wish you luck and hope to see you doing well in the future
Emma: I would encourage them to keep to themselves. Do NOT under any circumstance become "friends" with anyone in the jail, they are using you to get what they want, and use you against other people. These people are not to be trusted as they steal from each other, and harm each other, physically, and emotionally. Make sure you exercise as much as possible, do your time and get out. Keep your mind focused on positive things, and basically be a loner in jail, you are much better off!
Jeff: My advice would be. show respect and you will get respect. I have never had a problem with staff officers or inmates. everyone has less than a year to do and just want to go home. oh yeah and don't eat the food. its really bad

JM: Please list any other jail or rehab facilities you have been to.
Sam: None.
Corey: Attica,Commstock, Mid-State,Elmira
Emma: I was involved in an outpatient rehab/ recovery clinic at Unity Chemical Dependency. I was there for a year voluntarily, and have just over two years free of alcohol.
Jeff: Cortland county jail. for future reference a lot of these questions could not b answered in the amount of words you required. I did my best though
