Meals

Interview with Katy, Sarah and Laura

JM: How many meals did you get per day?
Katy: Three.
Sarah: three meals a day were provided.
Laura: We got 3 meals a day

JM: How would you rate the food? Please give details of why.
Katy: Yuck. Negative 5. I'm a vegetarian and I don't eat onions. Everything had onions or meat. If I didn't have money for commissary I was just screwed.
Sarah: on a scale of one to ten the food was a 3. The reason is that the majority of the food was a carbohydrate and was not filling which caused hunger soon after eating. I do not eat meat so getting a "special diet" was extremely difficult. The majority of the meals I was provided with were cheese sandwiches.
Laura: It really wasn't that bad. Some food sucked but that's why you order commissary. Breakfast was a lot of oatmeal but we had pancakes and cereal, lunch was ok, and dinner was hit or miss. It was a lot of bread and meat stuff and mashed potatoes. and some type of kool aid

JM: Did you have any favorite/least favorite meals?
Katy: The pizza was alright. You don't get salt, pepper or sugar with anything.
Sarah: I loved when cereal was served for breakfast as this made me feel almost like I was "normal" or at home. It was the only food that wasn't questionable.
Laura: least favorite was the oatmeal and the meat riblets, my favorite was the pancakes and the dinner.... didn't really have a favorite

JM: Were there any other snacks offered outside of meals? What was commissary like and how expensive was it?
Katy: Only if you bought them from commissary. At lunch they give you an apple or banana that you could save for a snack later.
Sarah: Commisary was offered as the only alternative to meals, snacks were not provided unless pregnant. Commisary was offered twice a week and the maximum amount to spend was $20. The options were mostly "junk" food like candy. The candy bars were $.65
Laura: For commissary you can order up to 75 dollars a week. Youre not supposed to trade but we did all the time. Especially for people who couldn't afford it, playing and winning games could definitely help
