JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Katy: Yes, you have access to telephone and can make
calls if you have money for a calling card. Sarah: Yes. Once phone was available 6am-10 pm for 12
inmates Laura: Yea there was 1 phone in D pod because it was a
smaller pod, but B and C had 2 phones in it
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Katy: You can make collect calls to a home phone. It
has to be set up through a phone company to
accept the collect calls.
The charges on the calling cards were $6 for 3
phone calls, up to 30 min each. It doesn't
matter how long you talk per phone call, it uses
one call up even if you talk for 2 minutes. Sarah: Each call would be 30 minutes long and cost $1.75
per call. I called home a minimum of 1x a day and
my best friend 1x a day. That would be about 21.0
a week. Laura: I was lucky Clermont has pretty good deals for
phone calls if you get the phone cards. I believe
a 15 dollar phone card got you 5 phone calls. Or
people would play games to get them
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Katy: Yes, or you can call collect to home phones that
have been set up to accept collect calls. Sarah: In 2001 all calls were collect. Laura: you could call collect but I think it's expensive
for collect
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Katy: It says they monitor them but I don't know if
they do or not. Sarah: All calls had the possibility to be recorded or
monitored. Laura: yes they did all the time
