JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Wyatt: We had no real gym facility or weight bench at
Butler. All we had access to for fitness was an
outdoor handball court. We had a small court
yard by the handball court just big enough for
the inmates to stand around in. Indoors we had a
tv room on each block, and tables for playing
chess and cards. We were not allowed to have any
radios or tvs in our cells. We also were not
allowed to order magazines or any other reading
materials. We did have a library where you could
look up case laws. Erica: there was nothing. they had a small yard with a
window up really high all you could see was the
sky there was a basketball hoop and that was it.
people played cards and read a lot of books. a
lot of people exericssed and did word puzzles. it
sucked
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Wyatt: Access to the TV on the blocks was a constant
fight. The black inmates always wanted to watch
BET and the white inmates wanted to watch the
news, or other programs. It was always the two
groups going at it over control of the tv. The
tv was always shut off at 9pm when we were
locked in our cells for the night. Erica: it was pretty competitive there were two tvs on
the block which was small so if we were watching
two separate shows women would fight about not
being able to hear the show and they would fiht
about what channel to watch the guard was in
control of the remotes
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Wyatt: YES. County jail does not give you access to any
real fitness equipment. The handball court
wasn't enough to keep us in good shape, and they
did not give us enough food at each meal. I
ended up losing 30lbs by the end of my stay at
Butler County. Once I got to state prison, we
had better access to weights and fitness
equipment. Erica: no I was depressed so I hardly ate. I was
physically out of shape but a lot of other women
gained a lot of weight
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Wyatt: We were allowed to go outside every other day
for one hour. You could play handball or attempt
to jog in place in the small courtyard. On days
where we were kept inside, your only option was
to do sit ups and pull ups in your cell. There
was not enough room for both cellmates to work
out at the same time. Erica: we were deffibnately not allowed to go outside.
they had a small yard with a window up high there
was a basket ball hoop nothing else
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Wyatt: Yes, inmates could go to church on Sundays. I
did not attend the church services, and did not
know many inmates who did. A few would go just
to get out of their cells for awhile. Erica: yes church came in like twice a week I have no
idea what it was like I didn't go other ppl liked
it
