JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Robert: Mostly card playing, the yard for one hour a day every other
day. It had a basketball court and walkway. There was a gym
that was available 3 times a week and there was a gym in the
main prison for basketball. Mostly cards was the activity of
choice for me. Amanda: there was a gym, a library, day room with tv and
also different kinds of groups like parenting,
drug and alcohol classes, anger management and
also church activities. If you had money, you
were allowed to purchase a Tv for ur cell. You
could also have reading material that was pre-
approved by the prison sent to you.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Robert: They would show movies 2 times a week on a VCR and
television was available in the common area and in the bunk
area but there were certain shows everyone watched like
Prison Break and 24 and a lot of various sports like football
and basketball. Never any major conflicts. Amanda: There was no entertainment except for the dayroom
TV. Typically- the same inmates would regulate
the television channels- so it really didn't make
sense to go to dayroom to watch a show bc u could
never choose it. Sometimes the girls did skits
and impromptu things that were mildly
entertaining- but they usually got into trouble
for that.
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Robert: No since I was in the kitchen and moving around a lot and
lifting items for the preparation of food. Amanda: Yes bc you did not have regular access to the
gym. Also all the food they feed you is
carbohydrate based and the commissary sells
nothing healthy.
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Robert: I told you earlier we got one hour every other day and could
walk or play ball and then there was the weight room if you
wanted to go. Amanda: Outside time was daily weather permitting. You
could either sit and talk or walk the small
track. I did that about three times a day about
100x a period.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Robert: They had services but I did not participate so I could not say
exactly what it entailed or how helpful it was. Amanda: The jail did offer church services down in the
chapel. I did not go, but the girls did like them
and stated there were different church groups on
a weekly basis.
