Interview with April, Julie, Brenda, Cesar and Eddie
JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? April: Yes while you were out of your cell you could
use it Julie: Pay phones were available in the day room Brenda: I used the phone every 15 minutes. I was always
on the phone. Cesar: yes there are phones on the blocks Eddie: Yes every time you are blocked out you have time
to make a call if money is on your phone account.
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? April: There is a connection fee, plus per minute.
It all depends where you are calling. I'd say
$30 a week is average Julie: regular pay phone charges and I'm not sure how the
county ones work I didn't use them. But I believe
with a previously set up account. Brenda: I would call my family every 15 minutes when
allowed. You can stay on the phone for 15
minutes. The cost was $1.57 for the entire 15
minutes. Whether you use the 15 or 1 minutes. Cesar: a dollar 90 i believe or collect calls that cost
an arm and a leg . Eddie: You have to add money onto a phone account to make
calls. I would believe the average inmate who made
calls regularly would be spending at least $15 a
week on calls at minimum
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? April: Yes or use the money on your books Julie: no but you could do it that way. Brenda: No my family put money on their phone. Cesar: yes if you aint want to collect call your family
and put a phone bill sky high Eddie: No the person who you wanted to call had to put
money on an account
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? April: Yes they were able to Julie: I would imagine they did. Brenda: I believe all calls were subject to taping. Cesar: im not sure i understand this question Eddie: Yes all calls can be recorded
