Medications

Interview with Marco, Juan and Emilio

JM: Did you always have access to necessary medications?
Marco: I didn't take any medications. I had a headache a few times and got pain reliever without a problem. I had poison ivy and they gave me benadryl as needed.
Juan: I was allowed to keep my asthma inhaler with me.
Emilio: They have a medical staff who takes care of any issues fairly efficeienntly.

JM: How did you get your medications?
Marco: Nobody in my unit was on any prescriptions. You could make a nurse call and they would be there within 30 minutes.
Juan: When my asthma medication ran low, I would put in a request form to the medical department and they would send me a replacement.
Emilio: I did not need medicine but those who did went to medical for their daily medications. No one seemed to complain.

JM: What types of punishments were incurred for abuse of drugs? Did you ever witness this?
Marco: You could lose privileges, even lose non- necessary medications.
Juan: No, I didn't see any such thing. But it was common knowledge that such a thing would result in being placed in solitary confinement and the addition of charges being levied.
Emilio: You got moved to a disciplinary unit and charged with a felony if you brought illegal drugs in. Only thing I witnessed was some chewing tobacco and very rarely some pills got in. Very limited movement and the majority of inmates not having contact visits cuts most of the drug trade out.
