Interview with Carrie, Michael, Roy, Tiff, Lela and Manuel
JM: How often could you receive visitors? Carrie: Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. They had
certain visiting hours, but you could only have
2 visitors at a time, and only once a day. Michael: 1 a week for 2 hours Roy: I couldn't. Tiff: VISITATION WAS ONLY ALLOWED TWICE A WEEK. IT WAS
ONLY FOR A 30 MINUTE VISIT Lela: I believe you could receive visitors only once or
twice a week. I think they are 30 min long. Not
positive tho. Manuel: It depend on you're last name.I believe you get
visits twice a week.and unless no one visit you.
JM: Was the check-in process lengthy for those who came to see you? Carrie: Yes, they had to wait in a line, and then write
down who they were there to see, show their
Identification, go through a search process and
a warrant check, then they had to wait for the
inmate to be called to the visitation area, and
then they got in a elevator and went to the
designated floor, and then to the pod the inmate
was in. If the person visiting had a warrant,
they didn't even make it to visit, they were
arrested there on the spot. Michael: yes about 20 minutes Roy: Not sure. Tiff: YES. U HAVE TO COME TAKE A NUMBER THEN WAIT TO BE
CALLED TO CHECK IN FOR WHO YOU ARE COMING TO SEE
THEN HAVE TO WAIT AGAIN FOR A BOOTH TO BECOME
AVAILABLE Lela: I'm not sure what the process was like for them as
far as long lines and paper work goes. I believe
you just need an ID and the person's name you are
visiting. You do have to come during certain hours
and on certain days. I think it's easiest to
register online to get your time spot booked. Not
sure if you can just "walk in" to see someone. Manuel: I believe so you had to be there atleast an hour
or two early so that you could be one of the first
ones to visit the person that was going to be
visited.
JM: What was the visiting environment like? Carrie: It was cold, dirty and very nonpersonal. We had
to sit on cold chairs with glass in between us
and talk to each other on a telephone and look
at each other behind the glass. Next to me was
another inmate, talking to the person that came
to visit him, Like I said, there is no such
thing as privacy in our county jail. Michael: behind a bulletproof glass wall Roy: N/A Tiff: I MEAN IT WAS ON A TV SCREEN. tHAT SUCKS . THAT
WAS NOT SPECTACULAR ABOUT THE VISIT IS JUST THAT
YOUTS WERE HAPPY TO SE YOUR LOVED ONE. WHEN ITS
OVER CAUSE THE BLANK THE SCREEN OUT WITH JUST A
MOMENTS NOTICE. IT USE TO TELL U THATU HAVE 2
MINUTES.
Lela: Well the visits are through a camera and screen
and my dorm only had one working video screen. You
just go to the second tier and go in the little
booth (bring a chair if there's not one up there)
and then pick up the phone and it will
automatically connect you if your visitor is
there. The times are very strict so like if its
scheduled for 2PM to 230, and your visitor doesn't
get there and checked in til 210 - they won't let
you get that 10 minutes put on the end. You'll
only get til 230, 20 minutes. Manuel: They told me that it was very difficult because
some people are very rowdy and start arguing with
the other visitors and if you don't sign up on
time for the visits you get turned down and have
to come back another day.there where always
fights
in the visiting waiting area.
