JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't. Lance: No, not really. Ana: Yes I did. I am use to being in control of my en
vironment and inmates are all very selfish and
immature with tv, food, card games, showering,
poor hygeine habits of other inmates, snoring,
etc. Jack: No i did not find it difficult to get along with
other inmates. I stayed quiet and observed how
things worked before i became settled into my
environment. I read mostly.
JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates? Lance: I guess I was in a really easy going pod. I saw
fights in other pods through a window but I
never saw a fight in my own pod. There was
occasional yelling but never anything physical. Ana: Mainly I had to keep my mouth shut. I also had
to spend a great deal of time listening to
stupid people with poor morals express
themselves and judge other people. Drug addict
criminals are not very mature, pleasant, smart
or kind people. Basically you just have to suck
it up and realize that it is not going to be
comfortable or pleasant. Jack: I stayed out of other peoples business and
conversations to avoid problems or fights with
others. I read mostly, exercised and pretty much
kept to myself. I answered questions others asked
and was honest about what i was put in there for.
I kept court paperwork to prove my honesty.
JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change? Lance: No, just whoever came in. Ana: No. If you were in jail for a long time and you
obeyed the rules and got on the good side of the
detention officers, sometimes you might be
granted a request for a cellmate, but not
usually. Your cellmate would change everytime
someone was released or got into trouble that
was your cellmate. Or everytime you were without
a cellmate and a new inmate came in, you would
generally get a new cellmate. This ranged
between daily up to once a month. It was just a
hit and miss type of thing. Jack: I was not able to choose an inmate as a cell mate.
While i was put up by the jail i had 3 different
cellmates in two weeks time. When i arrived i
slept on the floor of a two man cell. Then one
mane was moved, i moved onto a bunk and another
arrived to take up my previous spot on the floor.
