Medications

Interview with Lance, Ana and Jack

JM: Did you always have access to necessary medications?
Lance: Yes, you would have to put in a request form. The nurse would talk to you and give you what they thought you needed. People who came in on meds sometimes had a hard time because they would have to see the doctor to get it continued.
Ana: No. There is an "approved" list of medications that the staff can prescribe you both in jail and in prison. It is a very long and tedious process to get any medication, but especially specific ones. You will never be prescribed any narcotic pain medication in jail. In prison, you can get narcotics prescribed, but only if you have cancer, lose a lung or something similar.
Jack: No I did not have access to necessary medications. I had to wait a week until i could see the nurse and by then it was to late.

JM: How did you get your medications?
Lance: I believe about 10am they would come by with a medcart. You go up with water in your cup and spoon. Then they had you put water on your spoon, then put the pill in the water.
Ana: In jail you must put in a paper request, just like in prison. In jail it usually takes about a week to be seen and if the medical staff deem it necessary, you will be prescribed a medication from the list of approved meds. You can also have your family drop off certain meds and the medical staff will approve or deny it. In prison it takes three to seven weeks to be seen by a doctor.
Jack: People received their medications daily distributed through the main door to our cell block. People were lined up and called out to receive them.

JM: What types of punishments were incurred for abuse of drugs? Did you ever witness this?
Lance: I never saw it happen but I think you would go to solitary but it wasn't really.,,
Ana: In jail, you incur additional charges. In prison, you would generally lose good time and get sent to the lock down unit. I did not witness this in jail. I did witness this in prison.
Jack: I am not sure what kind of punishments exactly but i know for getting into trouble you could be thrown into the hole.
