Telephones

Interview with Jeffery, Serena and Gary

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Jeffery: Yes. After lockdown i always had access to a phone.
Serena: yes i had regular access to telephones.
Gary: Yea, they are hella expensive if you are calling out of town...I was calling to Humboldt County and Santa Rosa, and it was $10 for 15 minutes. LAME!!! There is this thing called inmate calling services, it gives you a local number when you are in Tahoe to get your phone calls to be only $4 for 15 minutes.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Jeffery: I was in county jail so i would guess not that much considering the longest sentence i was aware of was a year, maybe two. Anything longer was usually prison time. I hardly used the phones unless my mom put money on an account and that was rare because my parents lived so close and could visit regularly.
Serena: each call cost 10 dollars so it added up fast. i would guess that an inmate could make about 3-5 calls a week if lucky.
Gary: SEE ABOVE, lol.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Jeffery: Yes. Or set up a credited account per minute.
Serena: no no phone cards, it was collect
Gary: No, the people you call have to set up a 3-rd party account.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Jeffery: Of course. Or at least they said they would.
Serena: yes the jail screened all calls.
Gary: ALWAYS. Every 2 minutes it says "This call is being recorded" pretty lame!!
