JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't. Rod: NO. I TRY TO GET ALONG WITH EVERYONE. I DON'T
LIKE TO GET IN EVERYONE ELSE'S BUSINESS, BUT, I
LISTEN TO OTHERS IF THEY FEEL LIKE TALKING ABOUT
THEIR CASES, ETC. Kerry: WELL INITIALLY WHEN I FIRST GOT IN THAT CELL THE
REST OF THE GUYS WERE ASLEEP FOR THE MOST PART.sO
I TOLD THE GUY NEAREST ME TO SCOOT HIS ASS OVER SO
ICAN LAY DOWN Milton: At sometimes yes it just depends on the
mood you are in but sometimes conflict
cannot be avoided and you get in a
doughty or but most of the time I would
try to avoid it. James: No. I was pretty quiet and I have multiple prison
terms so I know how to conduct myself. Basically
one needs to be respectful of those around him and
use some common sense and pay attention to what
you are doing and follow the rules of the unit you
are in (I'm talking about the rules of the inmates
in the unit you are housed and not necessarily the
rules of the jail).
JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates? Rod: WELL, I USUALLY DO MY TIME IN 2 MAN CELLS 23
HOUR A DAY LOCK DOWN. THEN YOU ONLY HAVE ONE
OTHER PERSON TO INTERACT WITH UNTIL DAY ROOM,
WHERE YOU ONLY HAVE CONTACT WITH HALF OF YOUR
DORM ASSIGNED TO A CURRENT TIME SLOT TO GET OUT
OF YOUR CELL FOR A SHOWER AND A CUP OF HOT
WATER, AND READ THE PAPER.
Kerry: NOT A WHOLE LOT YOU KNOW IT'S NOT LIKE YOUR IN
STATE PRISON NOW.As i recall the ones you had to
worry about weren't the other inmates it was the
riverside county sheriffs whom you had to concern
yourself with the inmates for the most part did
not bother you Milton: Basically just bite my tongue and just
ignore what they had to say.you would
have to walk away some of the time.if the
incident involved a different race you need
to tell your shot caller so he can talk with
the other race'S shot caller so there isn't a
race riot James: One must focus themselves on where they are and
what the program is inside the unit they are
housed and pretty much be mindful of that and be
polite as far as saying excuse me, thank you etc,.
and shower daily and try not to bitch and whine
about everything and one will get through it.
JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change? Rod: NO. NO. NO. YOU HAVE NO SAY SO, AS TO WHO YOU
ARE HOUSED WITH. ACTUALLY, IF YOU ACT LIKE YOU
KNOW SOMEONE, THEY PURPOSELY SEPARATE YOU. Kerry: we werent in a situation like that.they took me to
banning road camp and the way they housed us
wasn't in cells is what they called them were
inmate pods Milton: No, you cannot choose your cell mate but
it would always be the same race as
yourself. It just depends Howe long they
would stay a fewer days our months just
depends what they were charged with
James: No you can't chose. Classification intrviews you
as far as do you have any enemies or are you in a
gang. Plus there are alot of dorm settings so you
might not necessarily be housed in a cell. Your
cellmate or your 'bunkie' if housed in a dorm
could change very frequently due to overcrowding
and transfers etc.
