JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Rod: IN RIVERSIDE COUNTY, THEY DON'T HAVE TOO MANY
PROGRAMS TO PASS THE TIME. BASICALLY THEY HAVE
BOOKS, HOWEVER, THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF THEM AS
WELL. PEOPLE FIGHT OVER ANY GOOD BOOKS THAT
MIGHT BE IN YOUR DORM. Kerry: facilities are you kidding me.the whole time that
i was there we weren't even allowed to go out side
or nothing period.so you just sat on your bunk and
slept or i guess you could bullshit with the other
guys if you felt like it there were no facilities
no way Milton: The only facilities they would give us to
help pad three time would be the
television, thenewspaper, they would let
you go outside for yard time twice a week
they also sometimes had preachers come
by and teach for a little bit and just talking
with other inmates that are there James: Very little. If one is sentenced already they may
have access to some sort of learning or GED
material. There is once or twice a week religious
services or bible study. The facility may have a
Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous meeting once a
week, but most counties are in bad fiscal shape
and there simply isn't enough funds to operate
many of the programs the jail might have had in
the past.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Rod: SOMETIMES YOU GOT IN WITH A BUNCH THAT WERE MORE
AGGRESSIVE THAN OTHERS. BUT NOBODY EVER MESSES
WITH ME, I AM ABOUT 6'3" APPROX. 245 LBS. SO, I
NEVER NOTICED ANY OF THAT GOING ON. Kerry: oh the comp was fierce imean there was one tv in
or pod and everybody would bitch and moan like
abunch of little kids about which tv shows they
wanted to watch.you would not believe the levels
of immaturity i'm desribing here it was like
totally totally disgusting big time Milton: No they always would turn the TV on
around nine in the morning and it stayed
on till like eleven at night.you would have
to make your own deck of cards out of milk
cartons and they would throw them away if
they spit them out which they consider
contraband. James: Basically the television which is in the dayroom
is the only entertainment there is, or if one
likes to play cards then there is always a game or
two going on during dayroom time. Competition to
watch TV is not fierce, but having it on a channel
worth watching is another matter. If you like
Jerry Springer then you'll be content.
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Rod: I DON'T WORK OUT IN JAIL. I BASICALLY, EAT AND
SLEEP AND WATCH TV. Kerry: i was only in there for about three days or so as
i recall so that was not an issue Milton: No I would workout in three blind spurs so
they could not see me and walk around
and do allot off push UPS James: Yes as yard is only a couple of times a week and
all it is is a small concrete area about the size
of a basketball court and only includes some bars
to do pull-ups etc..
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Rod: YOU GOT OFFERED REC ROOM OR ROOF TIME AS IT IS
CALLES 3 TIMES A WEEK. SOMETIMES VERY VERY EARLY
IN THE MORNING. Kerry: we were not allowed to go outside during my stay
at banning road camp.we were not allowed to
exercise in the pod s as i recall Milton: Twice a weak, theyhad no exercise
equipment just you were able to
walk, that's the only exercise that they allow
no working out when your inside James: Again as I said before, sometimes you can go out
to a concrete area about 2 or 3 times a week
depending on the facility.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Rod: YES. WE WERE OFFERED CHURCH. IT WAS OFFERED ON
SUNDAY. THEY HAD SINGING SOMETIMES. IT WAS
NICE TO JUST GET OUT OF YOUR CELL. Kerry: i was not there over a sunday so i really don't
have any insight on that topic as it wre Milton: Yes whenever they decided to come to
your unit Christian church service and
some times Jehovah s witness atleast once
a week James: Either that or bible study. Some jails they are
held 2 or maybe even 3 times a week, but usually
just once.
