JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Sarah: yes wait in line.. & do not fight over the
phone... you will be sent to lock down. Paul: yes, most days we had access to phones Allan: Sometimes, not really, too many guys Erik: Yes during free roam periods and at the end of
meals.
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Sarah: Collect Calls Only Paul: It was a minimum of $5 per call, and that was just a
short "hello, love you, goodby" . Phone rates were
predatory. One cell mate I had spent over $1,000 in
one month on calls to his wife and kids Allan: I wouldn't have any Idea, it's all collect ,
depends on where your people live Erik: I don't know as it varies on the company
providing the service to the person you're
calling. All calls are collect
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Sarah: not at that time Paul: phone cards were not offered. Only collect calls
were available Allan: none were available to us at Shasta Co. Erik: I have heard that they do. Neither Shasta or
Susanville offer calling cards on the commecary
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Sarah: I beleive they had the ability too. Paul: I would assume they did, but I do not know for
absolute certainty Allan: Of course, they're cops (Nosey) Erik: They said they did and I knew people who got
busted and given more time for trying to arraing
a drug deal to be delivered to the jail o0ver
the phones. They read mail too. All outgoing
lettes anr unsealed for guard inspection.
