Interview with Hillary, Tye, Eva, Richard and Victor
JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't. Hillary: No. I basically just stayed to myself. I had a
cellmate that I got along with pretty well. Tye: some times it was hard to get a long with the
other inmates because the house older people and
young kids together in the same cell block. ther
were many age related clashes Eva: no, i usually can be cordial with any type of
person..i am a very friendly outgoing person. when
i was incarcerated in this facility i had a very
low self esteem so i would do things for
acceptance. so i just found it better for myself
to stay away from other inmates so i wasn't
involoved in the drama or situations with other
inmates Richard: Yes everybody just had to act so sheisty,
sometimes for no reason but a minute gain of
extra food, most of them were drug addicts or
murderers so off the bat it was difficult to
relate Victor: I did not have trouble getting along with
others. I did always try to be nice and mind my
own business. I wasn't hurt or threatened by
any one ever.
JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates? Hillary: I stayed to myself. Tye: stay out of the day room alot. stay in my room and
read alot of the time. stayin g on your own
schedule is the key to avoiding any hassles - keep
your own work out times. eat and associate with
only the people you know personally and dont vouch
for anyone Eva: i pretty much stayed to myself unless someone
approached me wanting to play cards or
whatever..other than that i was in such a
depressed state that i stayed to myself. i did a
lot of room time reading and writing letters i was
hardly around the other inmates because i was
terrified of any type of conflict Richard: i actually fought but things you can do is,
remain by yourself and talk to nobody, you dont
ever have to fight if you just carry yourself
right and stay completely out of the mix and
just do your own routine and dont cross anybody
for any reason like even for playing a game,
that can lead to a fight even Victor: nothing really. This question is asking for a
lot of words that I don't really have. I never
saw a fight - almost one happened - but I was
never in a fight nor did I ever see a real fight
break out. I just minded my own business every
day.
JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change? Hillary: No. Tye: if i could choose my cell mate i would choose some
one i know and stick with them until either i was
sentenced or they were - so not very often Eva: no, they would not accomodate our wants. inmates
changed on a daily basis sometimes 2 and 3 times a
day. there were some officers that if they felt
there was a conflict would do what they could to
switch inmate/ cellmates but otherwise u would have
to dealwith it Richard: yes you can, but only if certain deps worked,
more of the seasoned deps allowed it, most deps
said no, unless you were going to fight with
your current one, and at the same time it was
pointless to move a celly in, celly's change
time varies, from hours to maybe weeks if youre
lucky with a good celly, you pretty much have to
change cellys every 2 weeks, its horrible living
with another grown man in such a small cell for
so long i dont care who he is, i actually lost
friends for being cellys too long Victor: Never got to chose cellmate. and cellmates
often changed especially when I got changed
around from Alpha 1 to Alpha 3 then the Tower.
And cell mates were changed off and on. I had
no conrol.
