Pre-sentencing

Interview with Rosa

JM: Tell us about the pre-sentencing process:
Rosa: Tried to fight charges in court for 1 year (DUI second conviction) was unable to as it is a mandatory sentence in CT. Went to court 12 times and hired a lawyer. Lawyer kept lying to me saying I should be able to get it dropped, but didn't. Lied to me.

JM: Did you have police stop by your house for questioning? If not please give us details on how you came to be arrested.
Rosa: No I didn't have the police stop by my house. I was on my way to work had been doing heroin and drinking all day. Car in front of me was stopped at red light but I swear it was green, and I didn't stop and I tapped the car in front of me and the woman driving the car called the police.

JM: What was court like? Please give as many details as you recall.
Rosa: I never had to go in the courtroom until my sentencing. My lawyer did all the court things for me. Pretty much just sat in hall way waiting hours for him to get done. On day of sentencing of course I was drunk and high but I knew that day I was going to jail.

JM: What were your original charges? What did you end up being convicted of?
Rosa: My charges were DUI second conviction and that's what I got convicted for also.
