Interview with Kelly, Bill, Katrina, Billy, Cory and Emily
JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Kelly: I was able to use the phone. We could use the phone from 8:00 in
the morning until 10:30 at night. There also was a phone to call
the public defender. The cost was fifty cents and would be billed to
whom you were calling as the call was collect. If there was a lock
down, which happened sometimes, when individuals became unruly
the phones were shut off. Bill: In the holding pod there was a phone that only
allowed collect calls to be made to land lines. Katrina: You have access to telephones until 8 Billy: Yes we have regular access to phones Cory: No, the inmates are locked down 85% of the day.
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Kelly: Cost to use the phone was 50 cents billed to the person you were
calling as all calls were collect. Bill: Collect calls only Katrina: If you don't have minutes prepaid to your phone it is 15.00 a
call for fifteen minutes and about 20 dollars a week Billy: The charges were 3.40 a call. The average money a week is
Fifty dollars a week Cory: each call is about 5.50 for about 5 minutes. So
most inmates try to use the phone as less as
possible.
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Emily: no collect only Kelly: We did not have phone cards but the phone was collect. There was
no other way to make calls except to place collect calls. Bill: you can. Katrina: No they didn't offer phone cards Billy: No we did need card to call out Cory: No, your people had to subscribe to a company
that the jail was set up with.
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Emily: yes Kelly: The phones were not monitored very well to my knowledge. Katrina: Yes they screen and record all calls Billy: Yes the jail screened our calls Cory: I believe it was according to what you were in
for they would screen the calls.
