Interview with Jennifer, Robert, Kathleen, Holly, Damon and Wade
JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't. Jennifer: I got along with all the other inmates because I
was pregnant and they were very nice to me. they
would give me some of the stuff they bought and
they all shared. thats only because I was
pregnant. Robert: I didnt find it diffucult getting along with
other inmates. I knew most of them in there. So
I was pretty much friends with everybody in
there. So it wasnt diffcult at all. Kathleen: Yes at times I did because I'm a very private person and I
wasn't used to be around so many different people
especially in a six person cell. Some inmates had no respect . Holly: No its not difficult to get along with other inmates I just chose to
be anti social do my time and come home they was cool I just didn't
want to indulge. Damon: yes because at the end of the day other inmates are
people too. everyone makes mistakes , but you cant
walk around jail with a chip on your shoulder.
people don't take to that too kindly. Wade: No, despite being the only Caucasian sharing a
holding cell with 6 African Americans facing much
more serious crimes at no point did I feel scared
or nervous, generally, since I was dressed for
what I mistakenly thought was a quick court date
and being a young looking very pale man, the other
inmates shared mostly confusion at my being
present. I have lived in baltimore my whole life
and give off a general feeling of un-intimidation,
but generally, other inmates wanted to talk about
why they were there in the first place (such as
carjacking, violent assaults, years old warrants)
as opposed to attempting any kind of "beef".
JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates? Jennifer: The types of things I had to do to avoid
problems and fights with other inmates was to
not run my mouth, and keep stuff to myself, and
not tell on anyone for any reason. If you stick
to that then you would be fine in jail if not
you would have a problem with all the inmates
for telling on people. Robert: the things you have to do to keep out of having
problems or fights is to not start anything with
other inmates and no snitching. you can play
spades and other things to get to know other
inmates and just keep your mouth shut and you
wont have any problems. Kathleen: I would stay to myself or talk to people I didn't have any
problems with. I played cards or talked on the phone . I also
did activities outside of the tier so that kept me away from
other inmates. I also worked while I was in there so I got
away from the inmates two times a day seven days a week. Holly: I really didn't have any problems or fights cause I stayed to myself I
came out to eat shower and I just watched television the whole
time hoping and praying the time go by soo fast.I talked on the
phone a lot I just stayed to myself and minded my business. Damon: all you had to do was stay to yourself , mind your
business , but show absolutely no weakness. you take
20 alpha males and lock them up , taking absolutely
all power from them. any chance a guy can feel like
he has power over you , he will take it. Wade: I didnt do much, I made sure to ask a lot of
questions, I remained vague about my charges and
especially vague about my background. I answered
in very short tid-bits but remained understanding
and open-eared to the their problems. I made fast
friends with several older inmates, as the
presence of a young, well dressed Caucasian inmate
likely brough upon a feeling of pity and perhaps
protection. I faced no fights and was generally
left alone until I became bored enough to strike
conversation.
JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change? Jennifer: You were not allowed to choose your cell mates.
they are giving to you by the guards and they
are the only ones that can change them. my
cellmates while I was in jail changed 3 times.
they would change the whole cell block. Robert: I didnt change cellmates at all becuase i was
only in there for a week. and you cant choose
inmates you want in your cell they are assigned
to you. Kathleen: No I wasn't able to choose an inmate. In jail you have no
choice now if you didn't get along with someone in your cell
you could move I had that issue once. When I was in there
for my first month I got a job so I got moved onto a different
tier with 5 other inmates in my cell. In my first tier I only
had one other cell mate. Holly: No we wasn't able to choose I didn't know my cell buddy.since I only
had days they left me in processinng the whole time.but me and my
buddy had the big cell were 3 women were in it so we had a new
cell
buddy every nite cause it was only 2 to a cell so one was with us till
another came then they put them together. Damon: no but my cell mate always coincidentally would end
up changing cells with me so I kept my cell mate the
entire time.I changed my cell a total of 3 times. Wade: As I have told the person in contact with me I
only served a single day in lockup. I am not the
regular jail inmate, I worked as a crime reporter
on the BaltimoreCrimeBlog prior to my
incarceration. And contributed stories to the
Baltimore Sun. But on the flip side occasionally
jails hold what are referred to "civilians" and I
give an honest recollection of such an experience
as one.
