Interview with Jennifer, Robert, Kathleen, Holly, Damon and Wade
JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Jennifer: You have phones on all the cell blocks. The
person you are calling has to have money on
there phone for you to call them. Robert: yes you have regular access to the phones Kathleen: Yes I used the phone as much as I could Holly: Yes if people I talked to put money on the phone. Damon: yes they were in the day rooms and in the gym Wade: Yes, I had regular access to phones, a phone book,
and in my situation a personal list of phone
numbers to call when the phones were available
during my processing situation.
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Jennifer: the charges on the phone is 80 cents for 30 or
15 minutes. the average inmate well me uses
about 30 dollars a week calling home. Robert: it was 80 cents a phone call so after you leave
the bull pin you cant call people unless they
have the system on there phones. Kathleen: It was .50 cent a call. If they had someone using a calling
card maybe 20 to 30 bucks a week on average. Holly: U had to get people to get money on there number to speak to
them.I guess about 30$ a week. Damon: i always made collect calls and so did most people I
knew. It was too expensive to use commissary. Wade: In Baltimore County I was generally under the
impression that calls were free so long as you
kept them under certain time restraints, there was
no limit on calls in the general holding situation
I faced.
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Jennifer: I didnt have to buy phone cards to call out the
person I was calling had to have something set
up for there phones to recive inmaste calling. Robert: no you didnt have to buy a phone card. Kathleen: No I never did I called collect Holly: Yes the person had to put money on there number. Damon: no because I always called collect. Wade: No, again it was a free call situation.
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Jennifer: Yes they have a recorded messgae saying they are
listening into your phone calls and everything. Robert: yes the jail screens your phone calls. Kathleen: Yes they screened the calls Holly: Of course the jail screened calls Damon: yes the phone announced that calls could be
screened. Wade: Presumably yes, all jails monitor phone calls, but
I called my lawyer at a point and it is
(hopefully) presumed that these calls were
un-monitered per law restrictions. As to whether
that is true I do not know.
