Interview with Bruce, Jen, Crystal, Allison and Deanne
JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Bruce: There were hours, but nobody really used the phones
because were were always released during the day to
go to our jobs and would just call people then. Jen: As long as the facility was not on lock down, head
count,at work or you weren't in the hole you could
use the phone to call collect only Crystal: Yes. Most of the time you could use them unless we were on lock
down. Allison: No just collect calls . Deanne: Yes, everyday 6-AM-10pm unless everyone gets in
trouble..
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Bruce: $50 a week perhaps, but not that many inmates used
the phones as we were all on work release. Jen: You can only call land lines collect or a person
has
to set up for collect calls on their cell phone,
many inmates had no one to call and some used the
phone frequently, my family spent about 50.00 a
month on my calls, the calls were only several
minutes each then they automatically disconnect Crystal: Im not sure how much but maybe around $2-3? I would say the
average inmate would spend $15 - 20 a week. Allison: The inmate dont pay the person
accepting the call does n if they dont no
call cause Deanne: COllect callng. I think it automatically charges
$1.50 just to place the call and then additional
fees for minutes. I would assume an inmate spends
$0 a week on phone calls, because it is not the
inmate that is being charged. It is the person
that they call, who has to pay.
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Bruce: No, all calls out were collect to whoever you were
calling. Jen: No,no phone cards are purchased Crystal: No. You used a phone number and I believe an inmate code. Allison: You cant by phone cards Deanne: No. I dont think you even need quarters.
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Bruce: I believe that they did. Jen: They said all calls are screened but I have no real
idea Crystal: It did state when you were calling that phone calls could be
screened. Allison: Yes thry do randomly . Deanne: They said they did, but it was a payphone in which
I got to dial the phone number on and there was
not someone right next to me at all times.
