JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Matthew: We had a single pay phone in the dorm. You could
use a calling card to call out to relatives/friends. Michelle: for the most part yes. for making collect calls
or if you have a calling card purchased in
comminsary. if you were on a disciplinary lock
down though the only phoone privleges you have
during that timme are to your lawyer. Art: Yes whenever the lines were openw
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Matthew: The cards I used were 5 dollar cards that allowed
you 15 mins per $1.40 from the card. I would say
the average inmate uses about 10-15 bucks a week
on cards. Michelle: the calls are about $2.00-$2.13 fro a 15 min.
call. it was $2.00 for people you were calling
collect and $2.13 if you were using a phone card. Art: Sirus thr company that contracts witht the jai charges per
minute or per call is 2.06 and if its out of state.
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Matthew: Yes, every week we had to order them. Michelle: if the person you wanted to call doesn't accept
collect calls, then yes. Art: Yes you need to uy a phone card or if they accept collect calls
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Matthew: Yes, the system used to call was monitored. Michelle: it tells you after you ecord your name that your
call may be monitored or recorded. whether or
not they do to every call, i don't truely know. Art: They screen anything they can
