Telephones

Interview with Darryl, Ralph and Cheryl

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Darryl: Yes, you could use them when you were out of your cell. You could call the people you wantedd to call and they put money on their phone so you could call collect.
Ralph: no, this varied for each inmate.
Cheryl: yes during out time we were allowed to use phones

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Darryl: $2.35 for 15 minutes.
Ralph: All calls are collect to the other party. It can take up to 4-5 days before you are "classified" and allowed to make a call.
Cheryl: I think it was $2.50 per call and you got 15 mins somepeople where on the phone 20 hours a week others never used the phone Id say average was maybe twice a week

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Darryl: No, there weren't phone cards.
Ralph: no
Cheryl: no the person you were calling would have to set up an account and add money to their number

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Darryl: Yes, they do that.
Ralph: yes
Cheryl: yes they recored all phone calls
