Interview with Kyle, Randy, Tyler, Dave and Melissa
JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Kyle: Yes but often had to wait Randy: YOU HAD ACCESS ANYTIME WHILE IN THE HOUSING PODS Tyler: Anytime you needed to make a call. When you
weren't in your cell Dave: ANYTIME THAT THE POD WAS OPEN YOU COULD USE THE PHONE Melissa: Yes.
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Kyle: If you called collect, expect to pay $10 for a
15 minute phone call
and $20 for out of state. The calling cards
would charge about $5
for a 15 minute phone call. Most guys would
spend $20-50 a week
on calls. However some don't get any at all Randy: THE CALLS I WERE TOLD WERE ABOUT $6 EACH AND I
PERSONALLY SPENT ABOUT $40 A WEEK AND THAT COULD
HAVE EASILY GONE HIGHER Tyler: As far as I know it was a collect call. The
phone never said how much. Some inmates made
calls everyday some never did. I cant answer how
much the average inmate spent. Dave: YOU HAD TO HAVE AN ACCOUNT SET UP WITH A PRIVATE
COMPANY AND THEY WERE LIKE $5 A CALL AND YOU COULD
SPEND A LOT IN A WEEK IF YOU CALLED A LOT Melissa: $3.50 per 15 minute call.
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Kyle: phone cards or collect if your people were able
to accept collect
calls Randy: NO YOU HAD TO HAVE A PERSON SET UP AN ACCOUNT
WITH A PRIVATE COMPANY TO ACCEPT CALLS. THIS
INVOLVED PUTTING AT LEAST $25 ON AN ACCOUNT Tyler: No the county didn't require a phone card. Dave: NO YOU HAD TO HAVE SOMEONE OUTSIDE SET UP AN ACCOUNT Melissa: You have to set up an account and "Load" money on to it. Sort of
like a virtual phone card. There is a fee to set it up, a fee each time
you reload it.
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Kyle: Yes all the time. You could here them on the line Randy: YES THEY DID, BOTH RECORDING AND MONITORING Tyler: The phone had a notice on the wall that all
calls were recorded. Dave: YES THEY DID AND RECORDED THEM Melissa: Absolutely yes. They also screen your visits, as you are talking
through glass on a phone.
