Reviews for Brevard County Jail
Reviews by Theresa
JM: Which jail did you visit?
Theresa: Brevard County Jail Sharpes, FL
JM: How long ago was your visit?
Theresa: Today 4/1/12
JM: How many times did you visit?
Theresa: I visit as much as I can. 3 times a week if I
am allowed to have an appointment.
JM: How do you go about making an appointment to see an inmate?
Theresa: You call the viitation number of 321-690-1518.
Usually the appointments are 7-10 days out from
the date you call. If you are from out of town,
I am told they will try to accomodate if they
can. I am confused on the visitation policy as
I can find noting in writing and it seems to
depend on who is working as who is answering the
phone for appointments when you call. Is each
inmate allowed only 3 visits per week total or
can 2 people call and each can get 3 visits with
the inmate?? This makes it hard when you have a
large family and everyone can not get in to see
the inmate. The visits are scheduled on the top
of every hour and they are 45 minute visits.
JM: How long did check-in process take?
Theresa: The check-in process on the phone for the first
time that I called visitation only took about 5
minutes and the lady was very helpful. Each
time I call now, you just have to let the phone
ring and ring and ring until they answer. They
usually have only 1 person answering the calls
and they have 3 incoming lines. The person
taking the appointments has to handle all 3
lines. I am told that if you call and it rings,
just stay on the line so you don't lose your
place in the call string. A few times the phone
has rang for about 10 minutes and then a
recording will come on and tell you to try your
call at a later time. Most of the time I let it
ring for under 2 minutes before my call is
answered.
JM: Were the guards accommodating?
Theresa: The ladies that work the appointment desk in the
visitation building have done their best to
accomodate. It is very nerve racking that our
tax payer monies are not fixing all of the
broken monitors and broken phones in the
visitation building. Most of the times that I
visit, I get a phone that has a high pitch
screeching noise in my ear and I have to ask to
switch a few times, all the while eating up my
visitation time and then I am cut short of my 45
minute visit. After changing phones/monitors 2-
3 times, I finally give up and just deal with
it. Most of the time the inmate has to almost
yell into the phone so that I can hear him over
the loud screeching noise and I have to deal
with the fact that I am going home with a
headached again due to the poor quality of video
and phones. I know this is not the guards fault
as they can not control what works and what does
not work. They have tried to accomodate each
time I visit, but there aren't always enough
working stations to transfer me or the inmate
to. If Brevard County cannot fix the system and
make it work correctly, they there should be
person to person visits. We are in the day and
age of technology, it makes no sense for
everything to be broken or of poor quality. It
is very hard and stressful on the inmate and on
the family or friends that come to visit if you
can't even enjoy your 45 minutes. Also, some of
the monitors show things with a green tint,
shadows, or annoying white lines across the
screen. If you only get to see your loved one
through a monitor, it should be the best
possible picture if there are no person to
person visits.
JM: What was the visiting environment like?
Theresa: The "sitting devices" are very hard and
uncomfortable. Most are not movable and most
have no backs, so 45 minutes can be hard on your
back and bottom. The building does not smell
clean and the phones are dirty. I have never
seen hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes to clean
off the phone or anything. At the least since
the phones do not work that great and you have
to sometimes put your mouth very close to the
phone, they are covered in germs and sanitizing
wipes should be available to each person before
your visit since you are not allowed to bring in
anything other than your ID and Keys. All other
personal items must be left in your vehicle.
JM: How long was your visit? Did the guards ever allow you to take extra time?
Theresa: I have never been allowed extra time nor have I
been allowed to see my inmate more than 3 times
for the week. Even if they have the
appointments available, they will not let me see
him more. This kind of stinks because the phone
calls are so very expensive. I am lucky that I
live
JM: What was the parking situation like?
Theresa: The parking is adequate. There is always open
parking spaces, I have never had a problem
finding a parking space.
JM: What advice would you offer to somebody who is going to visit an inmate in this jail?
Theresa: Most of the time, the building is a bit chilly.
You may want to bring a light sweater, just in
case. Be nice to the ladies running the
visitation building, they are your only
connection to visiting your inmate for the
duration of their stay. Expect everyone in the
room to hear your side of the conversation,
there is usally an echo in the room.
