Telephones

Interview with Alex, Javier and Kyle

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Alex: I had limited access from about 7:30AM to 9PM. I was entitled to 15 minutes of talk time.
Javier: Yes. They are shut down everyday for feed up which usually last an hour and for lockdown which is usually at 11PM depending on your block officer.
Kyle: Yes it was a code u put in the dial the number

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Alex: Collect calls
Javier: I'm not sure. I believe it was something like $2 a call local for 15 minute or $5 a call long distance for 15 minutes. I know that you use Envark as the provider.
Kyle: Um not sure nobody answered for me but maybe twenty five dollars at the most a week

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Alex: No. We couldn't purchase phone cards.
Javier: No
Kyle: No it was a code giving to you to dial

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Alex: Yes, the jail screened my calls.
Javier: They say that they do but Ive heard some very open conversations.
Kyle: I don't think they did but I'm not sure
