Leisure Time

Interview with Elise, Armando, Drew, Devin and Sean

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Elise: outside rec time for 1 hour every afternoon if the pod was good
Armando: there was ged programe bible class every sundays and they would have a life skills class to help people with there social skills and worksmencomp a program to release inmate early but only given by the court if issued and working in the cafeteria which where I was at in maine
Drew: No exact facilities except the one you were in, there was recreation times in the morning and afternoons. Basketball courts and excercise areas were all out side. Inside, there were t.v.s we could all watch, card games, dominoes, chess, checkers, books we could read, and of course you can sleep your time away.
Devin: T.v. and basketball. Other than that it's pretty much sit around and twiddle your thumbs and think about the street,You spend alot of time looking out your window if your lucky enough to have a window that you can see out of.And chow time is never enough when iy comes.
Sean: you have school search work about you

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Elise: no access what so ever there were tvs but no signal just static
Armando: well actally some co would actally bring movies and let us whacth them in the day room and that was about it I mean atleats the movies where new and that's about it what more you what your in jail not the marrot and when I was in wickcum for a week people had walk mans
Drew: There is plenty of entertainment, but competition can be fierce for certain games like dominoes and card games. These games can be taken over by groups who feel the need to gamble and play all day if they feel like. Games like Chess and checkers not so much, and books not at all.
Devin: They had two tvs per dorm. One on the spanish channel and one on the english channel. You pretty much watch what the majority want and that's 9 out of 10 times something u don't want to watch. So tv is not a good idea in the county jail.Read books is my advice.
Sean: the only entertainment you have is television and its 813 inch TV with 120 in me trying to watch the same thing so it's very hard to hear or see

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Elise: no i did not the food sucks and u do nothing but walk around of read so its like a diet and alitlle exercise
Armando: no not at all but you actally get fat seating not burning caliors I would pushups and situps realy any old fashion
Drew: No, it is very easy because all you have is time on your hands. If you decide to stay in shape, it is probably the best place to do it. However, don't count on building to much muscle without commissary.
Devin: Not really because that's all u got to do.You got all the time in the world to work out and stay in shape.
Sean: it is very hard to stay in shape in the Orange County Jail you're not allowed to exercise inside only doing right time and you will never get Rick really

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Elise: once a day for 1 hour in the afternnon if it was not raining
Armando: they dident let me go outside shit and I would tie my arms with my towel wrap it around a bunk and started to work out
Drew: We could go outside twice a day. We were allowed to play basketball, jog, lay in the sun if we chose, or seat and shoot the breeze.
Devin: Never got to go outside. They have a big enclosed room where grates cover the windows. You have the choice of playing basketball or standing around and watch people play basketball.
Sean: you are supposed to get 45 minutes per day off Rick and exercise time but you would be very lucky to get that once a month

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Elise: yes but only good behavior got to go
Armando: yes they did on Fridays and on saturdyas they had English and Spanish and they where alright actally especially the Spanish paster
Drew: Since I was in the Christian dorm, we had church services almost everyday held by many different groups of pastors. It was fun.
Devin: They offered church services in a room once or twice a week. They was really good and i attended them regularly.
Sean: yes they have church services of some sort everyday
