Reviews for Gwinnett County Jail
Reviews by Connie and Twinn
JM: Which jail did you visit?
Connie: Gwinnett County Detention Center
Twinn: Gwinnett County Detention Center
JM: How long ago was your visit?
Connie: Was visiting 2x/week since March 2010- Aug. 2010
Twinn: Over 3 months
JM: How many times did you visit?
Connie: 2x/week
Twinn: Once a week, sometimes twice on weekends.
JM: How do you go about making an appointment to see an inmate?
Connie: Inmate has to get in line on the day before he
wants you to visit, and put your name on a list.
Only a certain number of visitors allowed per day,
if he didn't get you on the list, you can't visit.
He has to call and tell you what day/time to come.
Twinn: The inmates have to schedule an appointment but
sometimes that will be hard to do sometimes when
the officers make all of the inmates lockdown and
go to their cells. Then the inmates have to call
and notify me to come to the scheduled time.
JM: How long did check-in process take?
Connie: Quick and easy. Walk through a metal detector, go
up to the counter and tell them the inmate's name
and show them your ID. Only wait is if there's a
line of people checking in.
Twinn: Usually quick and some officers will allow the
visitors to skip the long waiting lines.
JM: Were the guards accommodating?
Connie: Accommodating? I didn't have any requests for
them. They weren't jerks though. Actually some of
them were pleasant. Only on one visit, I was told
that the shirt I was wearing was not allowed
(spaghetti strap tank). This only happened once,
on other visits I had work tube top and shorts.
Twinn: No. Certain guards will try to pick a fight with
you like you're one of the inmates. They have the
worst attitudes. The people at the McDonalds drive
thru at 2 in the morning are wayyyyyyyy better
than any officer on duty. They will not help you.
JM: What was the visiting environment like?
Connie: Each inmate/visitor gets their own little cell
separated by glass.
Twinn: Dirty. Many people say it is cleans but thats
comparing to other jails.
JM: How long was your visit? Did the guards ever allow you to take extra time?
Connie: 30 mins. Guards let you up 5 mins early. So if
visitation is at 7, they'll let you up at 6:45,
and that's probably because some of the housing
units take a long time to get to, you have to walk
down several halls, elevators, etc. Some of the
housing units aren't far though.
Twinn: 30 minutes. One guard did give an extra 5 minutes
but only because the visit started 10 minutes late
for EVERYBODY not just me. The majority of the
time my visits start late. Most time 5 minutes
late, but when its 10 minutes late its a problem
to me.
JM: What was the parking situation like?
Connie: Plenty of parking. No issue there.
Twinn: Always hell. People there can not park. They are
just asking for a ticket.
JM: What advice would you offer to somebody who is going to visit an inmate in this jail?
Connie: Get there 10-15 minutes before your appt. time.
Don't dress too revealing, make sure you have your ID.
Twinn: Leave your house at least an hour early....
because no matter if you're driving from 30
minutes away in a thunderstorm and the traffic
lights shuts out in the city while you have your 1
year old nephew in the backseat, if you don't show
up on time, they don't care!!!
