Interview with Jack, Jerry, Sarah, Kristie, Tim, Judith and Gary
JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Jack: Nothing.....Locked down all except time to eat
and a hour for recreation. Jerry: Books to read Sarah: just onr big day room that we had "free time"
for 2 hours a day. Kristie: When we were allowed out of our cells (some days
it was for as little as thirty minutes but we were
supposed to get four hours out divided over the
course of the day) there was a cart of battered
books (mostly christian) and bibles. There was a
t.v. that pretty much stayed on whatever Jerry
Springer type show on that particular hour. Some
girls would play basketball. Most of us played
card games and smoked cigarettes. Gwinnett is one
of the few jails that you can smoke in (they will
even let you bring in a new opened pack when you
get arrested) so if you don't smoke before going
to jail you likely will have a habit upon release. Tim: None, the libraries were the first thing to go
after the first round of budget cuts. I had to buy
books and magazines and have them sent it. The
niggers control all tv sets and I can not hear
that well so I stayed in my cell and read.
Besides, if the library was open as soon as a
white inmate got to the front of the line the
nigger cop walked off on break. White inmates are
routinely denied use of the library Judith: Not much. They had books to read, and televisions when
we had free time. They also had a volleyball and
basketball courts. Other than the telephones and
talking to other inmates, there wasn't much else to
do but do time. They kept you locked down most of
the time you were there.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Jack: TV was always took up. Jerry: TV but most of the time it was very crowded and
impossible to get close enough to the TV to hear
it and the deputies in the cell blocks required
the volume to remain at such a low level it made
it hard to hear even if you were right up close
to the TV. Sarah: it was too fierce. it was like being caged up
with tons of hormonal psycos. Kristie: There was a lot of competition for the television.
Honestly it was really the only time I saw race
as a factor in the jail. Usually a group of
Spanish girls would commandeer one of the
televisions for telemundo and the black girls
would commandeer the other one and watch the CW.
The majority of white girls would either smoke,
create art or sit in their cells. There was a lot
of competition for the good books too but you
could usually just ask whoever was reading a
particular book to let you have it when they were
done.. some of the better books and waiting lists
5-6 people deep.
White inmates are
routinely denied use of the library Judith: We had regular access to things like t.v., books and
magazines. They also had basketballs to use, but
there was definitely a competition for everything.I
don't think anyone argued or fought over anything
except the telephones. They also had movies on the
weekends but no one ever fought about what to watch.
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Jack: No, I lost weight and the food was awful. Jerry: yes Sarah: yes. very little time to be our of the very
small cell, i did gain weight. all they gave us
was some sloppy pasta or froxen peanut butter
sandwiches. Kristie: No honestly I got in terrific shape while in jail.
The food sucks and I mostly didn't have canteen
money. Also you get really, really bored being
locked down so I found myself creating a workout
routine every morning. I was pretty ripped when I
got out. Tim: I did not bother. I went from 150 to over 300
pounds in prison. The yard was run and controlled
by niggers and most whites avoided it. I am not
social so I stayed to myself. I now have diabetes
because of the way the prison system treats white
people. Judith: Yes. It's very hard to keep fit when your locked up
in a 5x7 cell with another person for about 22 hours
a day.
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Jack: Once a day. Jerry: 3 times per day during free time. 9:00 - 10:30
a.m., 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. -
11:00 p.m. but this was only if you were in the
Towers. Those in the old jail only got 1 hour in
the morning, 1 hour in the afternoon, and 2
hours at night. Sarah: omce maybe twice a day Gary: not at all.. Kristie: We were allowed outside (a giant cage) anytime we
had free period. Sometimes as much as four times
a day but usually only twice. Mostly I just
smoked outside and got some sun on my skin would I
could. Tim: I did not bother. I went from 150 to over 300
pounds in prison. The yard was run and controlled
by niggers and most whites avoided it. I am not
social so I stayed to myself. I now have diabetes
because of the way the prison system treats white
people. Judith: We got to go outside twice a day for anywhere from
30 minutes to an hour. We could smoke, or walk
around the court. We also could play volleyball or
basketball if enoughpeople wanted to play.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Jack: Yes, did not go cause it was more trouble then it
was worth. Jerry: Yes, volunteers would come in once per week. Sarah: yes. wed. night and sunday. I attended just for
the experience. it was much calmer there. Kristie: Yep, church services are pretty much the only
thing you can get out of the cell for. They were
held a few times a week. It was a group of
inmates and a local church volunteer. The would
usually hand out pamphlets, speak about Jesus and
we would sing and then pray. They were held in a
small conference room located inside the pod -
they were usually packed full. Tim: Yeah, right. That will happen when pigs fly. They
had some
seriously screwed up religious fanatics in the
prison but actual services, forget it. Judith: They offered church services twice a week.On Sunday
morning and weds. evening. It was a non-
denominational service and most of the time we just
sang hymns.
