Meals

Interview with Karl, Lisa, Zach, Kelly, Jeff, Maurice, Jose and Ken

JM: How many meals did you get per day?
Karl: 3 if you wanna call them meals.
Lisa: three
Zach: you get three meals per day.
Kelly: they gave you three meals
Jeff: I received three meals per day.
Maurice: We got 3 meals a day every day
Jose: we got 3 meals a day but it wasnt enough
Kelly: We got breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Ken: Three meals a day , usually two cold and one warm unless you can afford to order canteen to feed yourself.

JM: How would you rate the food? Please give details of why.
Karl: poor tasting. no flavor. very small portions.. just enough to keep you from litterally starving. small portions. usually cold and late.
Lisa: 1, the food was terrible
Zach: well the food is really not that bad it has its ups and downs the bad part is the carbs they give you a lot of bread and starchy food nothing is fried for sum reason and every thing is turkey baced products they cant give anything with pork because there is muslums.
Kelly: the food was not very good at all hardly even edible it was a lot of beans and starches that were very fatty and a lot of the food that they gave you were all thrown together and mixed together and the portions of the food were very small but fatty
Jeff: I would give the food the lowest rating that is possible. It was like the food had no flavor at all and was cold half of the time. It was horrible to wake up early to a nasty breakfast even if you didn't want it but if you couldn't afford to buy extra food you had no choice.
Maurice: The food for the most part was good and it was health the inmates cooked the food their selfs so some time its not as good as other day depends on whos cooking that day but it wouldnt hert for them to clean the cooking area a little better and give us what the gards eat
Jose: teh food was beyond nasty it was either too cold no seasoning too watery like to no salt plus the portions werent enogh to feed a cat i mean it was bad the only good part was the chocolate chip cookie if u got one which was rare and no one would trade for them
Kelly: For the most part I thought the food was horrible. Especially all the hard boiled eggs we would get for breakfast. Sometimes I would have no idea what I was even eating. They had a hot and cold cart that a trustee would bring around that you could order food off of if you had the money. Of course you could order snack foods off of commissary if you had the money.
Ken: The food is plain. If only they would allow a few seasonings it would make it so much better. A majority of the meat is now processed turkey which gets old just like every thing else. Alot of rice, noodles and potatos, which in my mind isn't good for a majority of the population.

JM: Did you have any favorite/least favorite meals?
Karl: mexican night was the most filling. hated gettin jus a piece as bologna for dinner. that sucks. its really cruel in there when it comes to food. no person should have to go hungary.
Lisa: no
Zach: my favorite meal was chickin strips mac and cheese and roll the bad par was you didn't get big portions.
Kelly: I had no meals that were my favorite a lot of time I did not eat the meals my family gave me money
Jeff: I don't remember liking any of it and I know I didn't have a favorite but if I had to choose I would probably say donuts.
Maurice: My favorite meal was bbq checken they also had a good pizza and they had a good chose of fruits
Jose: i only had certain favorite foods because each time it came with random items there was no schedule except breakfast
Kelly: I really didnt have a favorite but i guess if I had to pick it would be the tacos. The hot dogs and boiled eggs was my least favorite.
Ken: Breakfast was always my favorite meal because its the only time you can get milk, and due to me being a country boy i love milk. Usually they would serve cereal and coffee cake. Wasnt much of a meal but it was the one that tasted the best, especially on pancake day.

JM: Were there any other snacks offered outside of meals? What was commissary like and how expensive was it?
Karl: yea. you had to buy them yourself.
Lisa: yes, if you ordered off the hot or cold cart
Zach: there was no snacks offered. you can buy canteen once a week but it is pretty expensive. there is also a hot cart that you can buy hot items off of it is expensive to.
Kelly: there was a thing called a hot cart and a cold cart that was ok the prices were a little high but it was a lot better that eating the food they offered so I ate that
Jeff: Yes there were other foods available from the commissary but you had to have someone buy it for you or put money on your account which I hardly ever had any money but the hot and cold carts had the best choices.
Maurice: No other then the hot cart and commissary they didnt offer anything else some say they offer more to snake on now but its been a few years since i have been in jail and hopfuly never be back
Jose: there was hot cart cold cart and meal of the week meal of he week was either little caesars pizza for $11.50 or chicken $12.99 then cold cart had subs from subway and hot cart had burgers and fries
Kelly: Yes there was commissary and hot and cold cart. I never got to enjoy the food on the hot and cold cart but everyone who did sure enjoyed it. I did get a couple items off the commissary a couple times. It was generic brand stuff and cost a lot more than it would at a grocery store.
Ken: The commissary did have alot of options in my opinion but was high. No snacks unless you had a buddy that was a diabetic and didnt want there late night sack lunch. If you didnt have people on the streets assisting you with purchasing commissary than you was going to get due to you cant work and make money in 90% of the jail.
