Telephones

Interview with Karl, Lisa, Zach, Kelly, Jeff, Maurice, Jose and Ken

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Karl: yes
Lisa: yes
Zach: yes you can use the phone till 11:00pm
Kelly: yes we had access to the phones
Jeff: Yes I could use the telephone whenever they let us walk the block.
Maurice: Yes we had phone right there in our ceels
Jose: the phones were in the pods and they were on from 8am to 11pm
Kelly: I did have access to a payphone.
Ken: A majority of the time you do, just depends on where you are in the jail.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Karl: 2 dollars
Lisa: area calling, charges varied by mileage
Zach: well it is two dollars per call local. and about twintyone dollars for out of state but the average spent per week is about twinty dollars
Kelly: it depends if you were calling local or out of state out of state very expensive
Jeff: I had an account set up that my family put time on my phone for me and I think it averaged about two dollars a call and I averaged about ten dollars a week but a lot of people spent a lot more than that.
Maurice: I would say about 200 or more on a week bases on on on on on
Jose: for a local call it was $1.85 plus tax so a total of $2.04 but then non local were around $10 to $20
Kelly: I got to make one collect call to my son once a week and my mom paid it on her phone bill. Other people would use money off there commissary account to make calls. I would say at least $10 a week for people who had the money.
Ken: At times I spent up to seventy bucks a week during holidays. The calls range from five to fifteen dollars, just depends on where you are calling and in FCDC they are only fifteen minutes.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Karl: have money on oyur books
Lisa: yes and no....you could do either, by phone card or debit
Zach: no it come off of your account
Kelly: no you could also call out collect
Jeff: No I had an account set up but the calls are not free.
Maurice: Not then but they do offer them now
Jose: no you took your commisary money and put it on your debit time
Kelly: No I made a collect call.
Ken: At FCDC your family must set up a account through there provider so that you are allowed to call.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Karl: yes
Lisa: YES
Zach: im not shure it says they do
Kelly: I do not know if they did
Jeff: Yes they can listen in if they choose to.
Maurice: As far as i know they did
Jose: yes but we were warned that they were recorded
Kelly: I suppose they very well could screen if they chose to.
Ken: Yes, they even tell you that your calls will be screened.
